Leading support charity Breast Cancer Care Scotland is asking Aberdeen residents to give their time to help local people affected by breast cancer.

The charity is appealing for volunteers for its new hair loss service, HeadStrong, which is set to launch in the city this coming spring.

Hair loss can be one of the most devastating side effects of cancer treatment, affecting an individual’s self confidence and body image.

Through HeadStrong women, and men, can learn how to use headscarves, hats and hairpieces to help reduce the impact of hair loss.

It is also keen to hear from people who would be interested in delivering breast health information talks to local groups and communities.

Catching cancer early by being breast aware – knowing how your breasts look and feel normally, and knowing what to do if there are any unusual changes – can lead to simpler, more effective treatment.

The charity’s Breast Health Promotion work is vital in spreading this important health message across communities in Scotland, and volunteers can play a key role in this activity.

Joanne Stewart, Volunteer Manager, said that people can find out more about all volunteering opportunities by contacting their Glasgow based office.

“Volunteers have always been at the heart of our organisation and we rely on them to help us keep our services free and accessible to anyone affected by breast cancer,” she said.

“We already have a good base of volunteers in Aberdeen, but we’re really keen to hear from new people interested in becoming a volunteer, especially as we’re set to launch the HeadStrong service and further expand our Breast Health Promotion work.”

Volunteers do not have to have any specialist medical knowledge or to have had breast cancer themselves. All volunteers will be given full training by the charity with continued support and development.
