Answering ads

The email address and/or phone number for responding to an ad can be found in the ‘Reply To’ box at the top of the ad and there may also be contact details in the main text of the ad itself.

If you can’t see an email address or phone number in the ad then it will be because the poster has chosen to protect their details. You can respond to their ad by clicking on the ‘Click here to email the poster’ link in the Reply To box which will take you to an online email form to write your message. This form will then get automatically sent onto the poster.

If you are replying using this form then you can attach any of the following file types to your response:
* pictures: bmp, jpg, gif
* documents (CVs, letters): doc, txt, pdf, rtf

I haven’t had a reply when I responded to an ad. Can you help?

Ads on Gumtree can get a lot of responses. If you haven’t received a reply from a poster then it may be that they have simply received a lot of responses to their ad and have either not had chance to reply to you yet/ or they have found what they were looking for.

Here at Gumtree we don’t have any relationships with our posters, and we don’t recommend or endorse anyone. We just provide a forum where people can advertise postings online. So I am afraid that we can’t get involved in chasing responses from posters. If after a few days you haven’t heard anything then you might want to either 1) send them one polite follow up email/ call or 2) try another ad!

How do I answer an ad? I can’t see any contact details?

If you can’t see a phone number or email address in an ad, the poster has chosen to protect their details from spam. To contact them simply use the link you should find in the Contact Details box where it says "Click here to reply to this ad". Clicking on this link you will then be taken to an online email form where you can type in your response to the ad. This form is then automatically emailed directly to the poster. back to top

I think the contact details for an ad are wrong. How can I let you know?

If you think the phone number or email address with an ad is wrong (e.g. the phone number is missing a digit) then please report the ad to us using the "Report this ad" button that can be found in the top right-hand corner of the ad.

Please choose the ‘Other’ reporting reason and explain the problem in the blank text box. We can then let the poster know so that they can correct it. back to top

I am having trouble sending an attachment to an advertiser through your online email form.

If you are replying to an ad using the online email form, and are attaching a document, your file will need to be under 1MB in size. Also, only the following file types can be attached:
* pictures: bmp, jpg, gif
* documents (CVs, letters): doc, txt, pdf, rtf

Tips for Job Applicants

Here are some tips to help you get the job you want:

* Write a note to go with your application
This is called a ‘covering letter’ and is just as important as your CV. Try to put something about yourself in the message box that summarises why you are suited for the job on offer.

* Tell people what job you are applying for
They may have hundreds of vacancies. If there’s a reference number in the advert, you should give this number in your ‘covering letter’ so that they know where you want to work.

* Be friendly
Make a nice comment when you attach your CV. They want to know if you are a good person to work with, so be professional, but also be friendly.

* Supply ALL information requested
Read the advert again and check that you are giving them all the information that is needed. For example they may ask for: your CV, a photo of yourself, your visa status, details of your qualifications. Employers are busy and may disregard your application if it is not completed as requested. You should NOT have to send your bank account details.

* Be patient
Not all employers will be able to give you a personal response. You don’t need to send them your CV twice.

* Be careful
We do not vet the advertisers on the site and therefore do not vouch for any advertisers. You may wish to find out more about the company before taking up a position. You should NOT have to provide your bank account details at this stage. If any jobs ask you for them, please report the ads to Gumtree by clicking on ‘Report this posting for review by Gumtree admin’.

* What employers like:
A well written ‘covering letter’ which shows an interest in the company
If they give a website address, they want to see that you have looked at their site and found out something about them. The more “personalised” the application, the better the chance that your application will stand out, to increase your chance of a successful application!

* What employers hate:
A one-line email response saying ‘please give me more information about the job’. This response will go straight in the bin!

* Also remember:
Your CV/photo will need to be under 1 MB to go through our filters. Only the following files can be attached:
* pictures: bmp, jpg, gif
* documents: doc, txt, pdf, rtf

By following these points you WILL have a much better chance of landing the job you want.
Good luck!

Reporting ads

Gumtree is a community site. We rely on your feedback to keep the site friendly and safe – and we also want to know when you spot a great ad! We like to think of it as you, the Gumtree community, ‘policing’ the site and keeping out the bad guys.

So on each ad there is a button "Report this ad" where you can bring an ad to our attention. You will be asked to choose your reason for reporting it. Your choices are:

• Against Gumtree policy
Use this option if you think the posting is inappropriate and doesn’t comply with our posting rules or terms & conditions

• Illegal / fraudulent ad
If you think the ad is illegal or you believe the advertiser to be a scammer

• Duplicate ad
If the same ad has been posted more than once a day in the same category

• Wrong category
Use this option if you think the ad belongs somewhere else on the site

• Gumtastic
If you read an ad you think is so funny, original or quirky that you want other Gumtree users to see it, let us know so we can put it in the Gumtastic category!

• Other (please specify):
If you want to tell us about the ad but it doesn’t fit any of the above reasons or you have additional information to share with us about it, please use this option and type your reasons in the blank box.

After an ad is reported to us, we take a look as quickly as we can and then decide if we need to remove it or promote it to the “Gumtastic” category.

As you can see, your help and feedback is extremely valuable to us. It helps shape Gumtree and keeps the content on the site clean, up-to-date and relevant for everyone.
